Hi, hey, hello!
Alrighty - we are still on a little bit of a lull before all the performances start happening, but don't get too comfy! We will take off pretty soon here. Percussion did well at their performance this past weekend. They received some helpful constructive comments that they will begin improving upon throughout the year! I really do love the SIUE Percussion Festival - it allows the percussion to receive some very pinpointed comments and is a wonderful way to start the season. Mrs. Moore sent out an email full of all the Sign Up Genius links that we will need throughout the fall season. I'll be sending them out in small chunks as they come up. Sept. 8 Football Sign Up Murphysboro Competition Sign Up For Murphysboro (Saturday, Sept. 16), on top of donating food, we will also need some parents to help chaperone the busses. We will have three busses and I would like at least two parents on each bus. We also would need water walkers for the parade as well as people to help set up drum major podiums, and the keyboard for the field show. When this schedule comes out, I will be sure to send it along to everyone. THANK YOU to the flute section who stayed after school last Thursday to run some drill! Awesome job, guys! Just a reminder that the Labor Day parade that was supposed to be on Saturday, Sept. 2 is now cancelled. Don't show up at the high school Saturday morning - no one will be there. :) Here's what we have coming up: This Week Monday, Aug. 28 - Marching Eagles Rehearsal (4pm-7pm) Wednesday, Aug. 30 - Percussion Rehearsal (3pm-4:30pm - attendance for this has been GREAT so far!) - Guard Rehearsal (4:30pm-7pm) Next Week Monday, Sept. 4 - NO SCHOOL! which means NO REHEARSAL Wednesday, Sept. 6 - Percussion Rehearsal (3pm-4:30pm) - Guard Rehearsal (4:30pm-7pm) Friday, Sept. 8 - Football vs. Olney (5pm call time - SIGN IN!) We do NOT have a Monday afternoon rehearsal before our first performance - please stay up to date on the memorization of all music! Please let me know if you have questions, comments, or concerns! Hi, hey, hello!
The first week of school is done - now just... a few more. :) The scrimmage was a success - thank you for those of you that came out in support of the athletics and fine arts in Bethalto. It wouldn't exist without your children and your support! Rehearsal on Monday is within the totality time of the eclipse. To protect our eyes, we will not be going outside until after the totality time is done. We will start rehearsal inside at 4pm. For those of you new to the high school band world, we really do start off with a bang! We have a little lull the next two or so weeks, but the goal is to complete our show so that every time we perform, we have a full production! :) What this means for rehearsals is that they are CRUCIAL for attendance. There is not a lot of time to play catch up in the upcoming weeks. What this means for those of you that need to catch up is that you will have meet with your student leader outside of rehearsal time. Please contact them - they WANT to help you! This upcoming Saturday, Aug. 26, we have the SIUE Percussion Festival. Itinerary can be found here. Percussion students and drum majors are required to go, however, if you'd like to come support our percussion section, please let me know! You may ride the bus over with us as long as you give me notice by Thursday. The Labor Day Parade held in Bethalto on Sept. 2 has been cancelled. We no longer will have a parade that Saturday morning. I was not told a reason for this cancellation. Our first football game is Friday, Sept. 8. There will be a sign up genius going out soon for volunteers for this event. The band will be needing some water volunteers as well as podium set up help and uniform business help. Easy enough process but we will be asking for your help on these nights as well as our two competition days, Sept. 16 and Oct. 14. I'm hoping that the BandShoppe order that will be bring in shoes, gloves, and guard uniforms will be coming in soon. This Week Monday, Aug. 21 - Marching Eagles Rehearsal (4pm-7pm) Wednesday, Aug. 23 - Roma's Fundraiser for Color Guard (11am-10pm - all you have to do is order and say it's for the guard! - Tri-M Board Meeting (2:30pm) - Percussion Rehearsal (3pm-4:30pm) - Guard Rehearsal (4:30pm-7pm) Saturday, Aug. 26 - SIUE Percussion Festival (Itinerary can be found here!) Next Week Monday, Aug. 28 - Marching Eagles Rehearsal (4pm-7pm) Wednesday, Aug. 30 - Percussion Rehearsal (3pm-4:30pm) - Guard Rehearsal (4:30pm-7pm) Upcoming Important Dates Friday, Sept. 8 - Football vs. Olney (5:30pm call time) Tuesday, Sept. 12 - Fine Arts Boosters Meeting (6:30pm) Saturday, Sept. 16 - Murphysboro Competition (All Day - Itinerary TBA) If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please do not hesitate to ask! Musically yours -- Michaela Davis Hello, all!
There are two things that I wanted to mention in this short email. The first of which being a color guard fundraiser! The Color Guard is sponsoring a day at Roma's on Wednesday, Aug. 23. Such an easy fundraiser: all you have to do is order food from or at Roma's on the day of the 23rd and say you're ordering for the color guard! I also have a few extra show shirts - the gray shirt that the kids have. If you are interested in buying this shirt, please let me know. I'm asking for $10 for sizes small-XL, or $12 for 2x-3x. There is a limited amount so it will be first come, first served (or communicated!) Musically yours -- Hi, hey, hello!
Thank you for your support at the Marching Eagles preview performance. I hope you enjoyed the show and I hope you see the progress they make throughout the season; the staff has already seen the progress from day one of band camp to last night and it is truly a wonderful thing to behold. This is a great band; they can only get better from here! Our Monday evening rehearsals begin this week! We rehearse ONE day after school: on Mondays from 4pm-7pm. For those of you that are involved in other activities and athletics, please take the time to talk to your coaches and teachers that run the activities. Please mention that we only meet once a week for an out of school rehearsal - if possible, be at our band rehearsal the entire time. For those of you that have missed rehearsals due to other conflicts, you are seeing how much we accomplish in one rehearsal. Every time someone misses a rehearsal, it holds the entire group back because then we have to go back and re-teach something we have already learned. Please communicate! Band will seem really busy until October - time management is a must for us! If your child starts to struggle with time management, take the time to talk to an upperclassmen's parents or guardians. They have found a lot of tricks to manage everything. I will be going over the class syllabus on the first day of school, and you can find a copy of this syllabus here. Take a glance at it - please understand that once the school year starts, rehearsals and performances are grades. Lack of communication about absences and absences that are considered unexcused will cause a grade drop. Also - take a look at the playing tests - found on page 4. We have FOUR playing tests throughout the year, one per quarter. These playing tests are due at 11:59pm on the specific day and will be submitted via video to GoogleClassroom. Once students are given their computers, I'll explain how to do this. These playing tests are 100 points each - and while during marching season, where we have a lot of grades going into to PowerSchool - during the winter and spring, we don't have as many grades and these tests can affect grades. Upperclassmen - take a look at what scales are being required of you. They are different than last year's scales. Extra credit opportunities vary throughout the school year. There are extra credit opportunities within the playing tests, but for the most part, extra credit is usually offered when helping outside of the school day - staying to clean the auditorium, helping set up for Christmas programs, pep band games that end up not being on the original schedule I hand out, etc. When it comes to dress for uniforms and performances, I do take points off for not following the dress code and dress requirements. If you are confused about what to wear to a performance, please let me know and I'll address it. Speaking about dress: for the Purple and Gold scrimmage on Friday, we will be wearing parade uniforms. This means, marching shoes (I'm hoping the order comes in this week), tall, black socks, black pants, and polo (this should also come in this week.) Hair should be out of your face and in a ponytail for those of you that have longer hair, and no hats or sunglasses should be worn. If this plan changes, I will let you know. Labor Day Parade I have heard that the Labor Day Parade in Bethalto may be cancelled. Once I get a final confirmation of this, I will let you know. As of right now, please keep the Labor Day Parade on your schedules (Saturday, Sept. 2). This Week Monday, Aug. 14 - Marching Eagles Rehearsal (4pm-7pm) Wednesday, Aug. 16 - Percussion Rehearsal (3pm-4:30pm) - Color Guard Rehearsal (4:30pm-7pm) Friday, Aug. 18 - Purple and Gold Scrimmage (5pm) Next Week Monday, Aug. 21 - Marching Eagles Rehearsal (4pm-7pm) Wednesday, Aug. 23 - Percussion Rehearsal (3pm-4:30pm) - Color Guard Rehearsal (4:30pm-7pm) Saturday, Aug. 26 - SIUE Percussion Festival (All day) Percussion and Drum Majors only Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns. Musically yours -- Michaela Davis Hi, Hey, Hello!
Band Camp has been survived by all! We had some phenomenal weather for band camp and we accomplished a lot with that weather! This week leading into the first week of school is a little different than normal. We will have a rehearsal from 4pm-8pm on Tuesday, Aug. 8 as well as a rehearsal on Thursday, Aug. 10 from 4pm-6pm with a family and friends preview performance on Thursday at 6:30pm. Dress for students for the preview will be show shirt (received when paying the $25 band camp fee) and black shorts with tennis shoes. We will more than likely be on the practice field for this performance. After this week, we will have our weekly band rehearsals on Mondays from 4pm-7pm. Percussion and guard attend these rehearsals as well. Percussion and guard sections also have their own section rehearsals - guard, please follow Kelsey's schedule. Percussion: we will be meeting on Wednesdays from 3pm-4:30pm. Once the school year starts, every rehearsal and performance are grades in PowerSchool. If an absence is unexcused for any reason, it gets put into the system as a zero. For an absence to be excused, I need an email or letter from the parents or guardian. An email, letter, or verbal notification from the student will not be accepted. If a student is late to a rehearsal or performance for an unexcused reason (above rules apply), ten points will be taken off of the grade. I do want to send a small reminder to all: the band depends on everyone in the ensemble to do their part for us to succeed. Absences do negatively affect the ensemble. If possible, please try to avoid absences. In saying that, however, I know that life is messy and hectic at the best of times! Please communicate. This week is also Beginning Band Camp from 10am-12pm at Civic Memorial. This camp is optional to the high school students - if they decide to attend, they will be helping our beginning band students learn the basics of their instruments and how to read music. If wanting to attend this camp and help (it will definitely be much different than the high school's band camp!), please be at Civic Memorial by 9:30am. I will definitely need clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, trombones, euphoniums, and percussionists. If you haven't turned in the band order form, please do so ASAP. EVERYONE needs to pay the band camp fee, as well as purchase the NEW polo for the school year. The show shirts will be worn underneath uniforms during football games and competitions, and the polos will be worn during parades. Shelly Moore will be sending out a Sign Up Genius for volunteers to help set up during the football games. We will need help setting up water, the drum majors podiums, our piano, and someone to help with uniforms if needed. I'm so excited for the students to show you what they've accomplished this past week. Looking forward to seeing you all on Thursday at 6:30pm!
