Hi, hey, hello!
Our Bobby's Caramel Apples fundraiser has begun! Order forms with payment are due Friday, Sept. 7 with delivery being on Thursday, Sept. 20. WOW, WOW, WOW! Amazing first football performance from the Marching Eagles! We have the whole show musically on the field and the plan in the next two weeks is to complete the rest of the drill so that hopefully we have a whole show for our first competition on Sept. 8! The band cannot thank the parents that came out and helped during the game on Friday enough! Without your help, things would not have gone as smoothly as they did: from being hydrated throughout the evening, to helping us set up the field itself, to helping move all of the various instruments from point A to point B - THANK YOU SO MUCH! Hi, hey, hello!
The Marching Eagles had a wonderful first pre-game performance on Friday at the Purple & Gold scrimmage. This upcoming Friday is our first halftime performance as well! Looking forward to seeing everyone their supporting our musicians! This Friday, we will kick off our first fundraiser for the year: Caramel apples from Bobby's Ice Cream in Maryville! This fundraiser is being used to raise funds for our new uniform budget. Our current uniforms were purchased in 2007 and uniforms usually have a lifespan of about ten years if taken care of well. While our uniforms are not falling apart yet, we would like to start saving so that when we have to purchase new uniforms, we have the money available. Thank you to Mrs. White, Maggie's mom, for helping us organize this fundraiser! The syllabus agreement form is due as a grade by this Friday, Aug. 24th. Football Games At all home football games, the band performs pre-game (what we performed at the Purple & Gold scrimmage), then we go into the stands and watch the first half of the game and participate in cheering on our football team. During the second quarter, we go down to the track to warm up and prepare for our halftime performance. After our halftime performance, we go back into the stands, take off our jackets and shakos (hats), and we are off third quarter of the game, which means students can go eat, hang out with their friends and family, go to the bathroom, etc. For fourth quarter, we are back in the stands as a band, cheering on the other team! We will need some help on football game nights: we will need water, people to help carry and set up the drum major podiums, as well as help setting up our front ensemble, uniform help; all of these things that help our band be the best they can possibly be! Call time for football games is 5:30pm, with dismissal being when the game ends (around 8:30/9) If you have any questions about our football games, please let me know! This Week Monday, Aug. 20 - Marching Eagles rehearsal (5pm-8pm) Wednesday, Aug. 22 - Percussion rehearsal (3pm-4pm) - Color Guard rehearsal (4pm-6pm) Friday, Aug. 24 - Bobby's Ice Cream Caramel Apple Fundraiser Kick-Off - Football vs. Marquette (5:30pm call) Next Week Monday, Aug. 27 - Marching Eagles rehearsal (5pm-8pm) Wednesday, Aug. 29 - Percussion rehearsal (3pm-4pm) - Color Guard rehearsal (4pm-6pm) Friday, Aug. 31 - Football vs. Wood River (5:30pm call) If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please do not hesitate to let me know. Thank you to the high school students that helped out with the 5th grade band camp this past week as well as the 7th and 8th grade band camp! It was AWESOME to see and it definitely will help in the future! You inspire the beginning band kids to stick with it, I promise you! And as you all know, beginning band is probably the hardest year when it comes to learning your instrument. Marching Eagles rehearsals on Monday evenings when school starts will be from 5pm-8pm. This upcoming week is a little different, but just so you can plan ahead, that will be the times. If you are involved in other activities, please communicate with me about games/meets/matches, etc. Let's jump into this week! Friday is the Purple and Gold Scrimmage for football. We will be playing the Star Spangled Banner and the School Song in between the JV/freshmen and varsity game. Our band students will also be recognized in between the two games (hopefully around 7pm). Call time for this performance will be 6:15pm. Dress will be band polos (which should be delivered Friday) and black pants with black socks and marching shoes (also hopefully delivered by Friday). Dress is a grade, so be sure to follow all above instructions. Saturday is the optional alumni game performance. We will also be performing the Star Spangled Banner before the game. The call time for this performance will also be 6:15pm. Pizza will be provided for those who attend this and dress is the same as above: band polo, black pants, black socks and marching shoes. Please let me know by THURSDAY whether or not you will be attending this performance. I want to make sure A) we have enough students attending the play and B) we have enough pizza for every one. This Week Monday, Aug. 13 - Marching Eagles rehearsal (4pm-5:30pm - released early for freshmen orientation) Wednesday, Aug. 15 - First Day of School! - Percussion rehearsal (3pm-4pm) Thursday, Aug. 17 - CMHS Meet the Teacher (6pm-7pm) Friday, Aug. 18 - Purple and Gold Scrimmage (6:15pm call) Saturday, Aug. 19 - Optional Alumni Game (6:15pm call) Next Week Monday, Aug. 20 - Marching Eagles rehearsal (5pm-8pm) Wednesday, Aug. 22 - Percussion rehearsal (3pm-4pm) Friday, Aug. 24 - Football vs. Marquette (5pm call - dress for this is show shirt and black shorts. We will be wearing the marching band uniform for this performance) I look forward to starting off the school year with you all! Please let me know if you have any questions, comments or concerns. Wow, wow, and WOW! This last week of band camp was absolutely amazing; the band has learned the first two movements of their show, Into the Stars, of which there are three movements total and we are on track to start learning more! There are quite a few people to thank for this week being so smooth and efficient! The Staff! Sam Frosch, Justin Morris, Charles Prager, Will Schmalback, Kelsey Newcomb, and Kennedy Rainwater were essential this week in making band camp educational as well as so much FUN! Thank you all so much for being with our band this week! The Parents! This year, the parent help was OFF THE CHARTS! Band is a village and it takes all of you to make the village run. Special shout out to the following parents: Jenifer Gross for organizing snacks and the potluck for camp as well as reorganizing and inventorying all of our supplies for trips in the orange tubs! (special thanks to her daughter, Gilly, as well!) Rhiana Stuart for heading up the uniform fittings and Anna Pearson and Shelly Moore for helping out with fittings as well! Uniform fittings are NOT an easy task! All parents who were able to stop by and help out in any way, whether it be by donating food for the camp, potluck, or donating your time. We cannot do this without you! The Students! This is my third year in Bethalto and I've never been so impressed with a band camp as I was this past week. The band gave the staff all of their energy every day, and they were willing to work hard all week; the results of this hard work will be seen in spades as we continue toward our season! The attitude of this band is also just phenomenal. Keep it up, band! Looking ahead! We do have some rehearsals coming up and the times are altering a little bit (see below). As the school year starts, I do want to clarify the following: 1. Rehearsals are required and they are a grade. Excused absences must be communicated to me before rehearsal. If a student has an excused absence from the school the day of a rehearsal, they will be automatically excused from rehearsal. This year, there is NO make-up assignment for missing rehearsals. If they are excused, it will be exempt on their grade. If it unexcused, it will be a zero. Communicate absences BEFOREHAND. 2. ALL performances are required and they are also a grade. I would like to mention that when it comes to performances as well as rehearsals, every student is important in our ensemble. If someone is missing, it hurts us! That being said, emergencies occur. If a student is excused from a performance, they will have a make-up assignment due a week from the performance. Communicate absences BEFOREHAND. This Week Monday, Aug. 6 - Beginning Band Camp (10am-12pm - Student Leaders Only) - 7th/8th Grade Band Camp (1:30pm-3:30pm - Select Students Only) - Marching Eagles Rehearsal (4pm-8pm) Tuesday, Aug. 7 - Beginning Band Camp (10am-12pm - Student Leaders Only) - 7th/8th Grade Band Camp (1:30pm-3:30pm - Select Students Only) Wednesday, Aug. 8 - Beginning Band Camp (10am-12pm - Student Leaders Only) - 7th/8th Grade Band Camp (1:30pm-3:30pm - Select Students Only) - Marching Eagles Rehearsal (4pm-6pm) - Marching Eagles Preview Performance (6:30pm) Thursday, Aug. 9 - Beginning Band Camp (10am-12pm - Student Leaders Only) - 7th/8th Grade Band Camp (1:30pm-3:30pm - Select Students Only) Friday, Aug. 10 - Beginning Band Camp (10am-12pm - Student Leaders Only) - 7th/8th Grade Band Camp (1:30pm-3:30pm - Select Students Only) Next Week Monday, Aug. 13 - Marching Eagles Rehearsal (4pm-6pm) Wednesday, Aug. 15 - Percussion Rehearsal (3pm-4pm) Thursday, Aug. 16 - CMHS Meet the Teacher Night (6pm-7pm) Friday, Aug. 17 - Purple & Gold Scrimmage (5:30pm call - dress will be marching shoes, black socks, black pants, band polo) Saturday, Aug. 18 - Alumni Game (optional - please let me know if you will be attending - dress is same as the scrimmage - time TBA) We really do have a running start for the school year, but band life doesn't really slow down until mid-October. Please be ready for this, and plan accordingly: stay on top of school work and be productive whenever we are together! This is shaping up to be a great season! Musically yours -- Michaela Davis |
