Hi, hey, hello!
I hope everyone's Christmas week was a relaxing and family filled time for all! As we roll into January, I wanted to make sure everyone was on the same page! Jan. 3 SIUE E-Band Game This is an optional, free opportunity for our musicians at SIUE! We have been invited to play with the SIU E-Band at some basketball games. There are two games this evening - a 5:30pm game with a 4:55pm call in their gym, ready to play and a 7:30pm game with a 6:55pm call in their gym, ready to play. This is a get yourself there type of event. The location of the evening is in their Sam M. Vadalabene Center. If you GoogleMaps this building, it should take you right to it. I'll be there as well if you want to message me via Remind as to where you're going. It'll be a lot of sightreading, but a lot of fun! Please wear SIUE colors - red! Please let me know if you plan on attending this event. Solo and Ensemble Solo and Ensemble is coming up on Saturday, March 2. If you are interested in performing a solo or an ensemble for this event, please communicate with me. I will help you where I can, but this event is an optional event, and the preparation falls on you! Unlike in middle school, we do NOT have to select from a certain list of repertoire, which opens up options, but you cannot choose something that is not of quality. If you decide to participate in Solo and Ensemble, we will meet at least two times beforehand to make sure that everything is going smoothly. You will have to pay for your solo or ensemble ($8 per solo; ensembles vary but you can split the cost with the other members). If you need a pianist, please communicate with me! All notification and literature selections need to be completed by Friday, Jan. 25. SIUE Bi-State Festival Select students have been chose to attend this event. If you have been notified as being one of those students, please look at the THIS itinerary. Class Goals For the first half of second semester, we focus on what I call the Solo and Ensemble Project. While we do not all attend Solo and Ensemble, it is vitally important that our growing musicians are challenged with different literature as well as different responsibilities. While performing in a concert band setting is the norm for our musicians, playing in a smaller ensemble brings about different challenges: being an individual performer, because in smaller ensembles there are less parts and fewer musicians, individual accountability for knowing their parts, and the list could go on! We will still be learning a few concert band pieces for the Winter Showcase as well as for the Chicago trip, but the focus is the Solo and Ensemble Project. I think that's it for the first part of January! Week of Dec. 31 Monday, Dec. 31 - New Years Eve - NO SCHOOL! Tuesday, Jan. 1 - New Years Day - NO SCHOOL! Wednesday, Jan. 2 - Christmas Break - NO SCHOOL! Thursday, Jan. 3 - Traditional Schedule - SIU E-Band Games - 4:55pm call; 6:55pm call - wear RED! Sam M. Vadalabene Center @ SIUE Week of Jan. 7 Monday, Jan. 7 - CM Winter Guard (6:30pm-8:30pm, Bethalto East) Tuesday, Jan. 8 - Fine Arts Boosters Meeting (6pm, CM Commons) Wednesday, Jan. 9 - CM Winter Guard (6:30pm-8:30pm, Bethalto East) If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please do not hesitate to let me know! Hi, hey, hello!
The band and choir held such a lovely concert on Wednesday night! Thank you to all the musicians for their hard work leading into the concert, and to the parents, families, friends, and staff that came to support the musicians. The auditorium was packed! Huge THANK YOU to all who came to the Mattress Fundraiser this past weekend. While I don't have exact totals (we will by Tuesday), I know that we sold 30 units, which the normal amount of units for the first year is from 25-27, so we did exceed that! Those of you that held signs and wore mattresses during the event were a HUGE help! Congratulations to Alex Hornsey, Brayden Shirley, and jazz band member, Emily Pipkin, for being honored as being selected as an Illinois State Scholars! It's wonderful to see so many musicians selected for this achievement. Holiday Showcase On Monday, we will be performing in the Holiday Showcase put on by Student Council. If possible, please be at the school at 7:30am to help set up the gym for our performance. We have to move all percussion equipment, as well as set up chairs and stands. If you cannot be there at 7:30am to help move, please be seated by 7:50am with your instrument in the gym to warm up. We will perform Christmas Prism, then percussion will perform Swingin' Jingle Bells, then it's some individual performances, followed by choir. At the end of the showcase, we will perform Selections from The Polar Express with the choir! Afterwards, we will move everything back to the auditorium and then you will head to first hour! Tour to MB and Trimpe The itinerary can be found HERE. As a thank you for all of your hard work, the Fine Arts Boosters will be purchasing pizza for lunch on Tuesday. Instead of leaving campus to get lunch, just come to the auditorium and you will be fed. :) Dress in Christmas colors, ugly sweaters preferred! After eating, we will load the trailer, then the Mattress Fundraiser people will be presenting a check to us for what we made this past weekend! Remember, our White Elephant gift exchange will be after we return to Trimpe and unload everything! $10 limit, make sure to wrap your gift! You can put it underneath the tree in the auditorium when you get there. SIUE E-Band Professor Smithiger from SIUE has invited our students to join the E-Band during their pep band game on Thursday, Jan 3. He would like a head count of who is attending this event. I'll speak more about it in class tomorrow, but all we do is take our instruments and play music (just like at our pep band games!). It will be a drive yourself there type of event, but it should be a lot of fun! I'll be taking my clarinet and playing as well! Class Goals We will review for the final on Monday, then our final is Wednesday! Please look at GoogleClassroom for the study guide. Christmas Programs All of the schools in our district hold a Christmas Program at CMHS. These are huge programs that involve much effort from our music staff and to make their lives a little bit easier the night of the event, I encourage high school students to come to the program to help set up, hand out programs and Mattress Fundraiser flyers, supervise during the program, and tear down after it.
